ipconfig: an internal error occurred: the request is not supported

Computer Aid Posted on 8 February, 2009 by Luigi Martin8 February, 2009

This XP PC was very confused.

It seems it had run out of disk space while updating to SP3.

I managed to free up some space, but the wifi connection was acting weird:

The XP wireless would say that it was connected normally, but an ipconfig /all from a CMD prompt would return with:

ipconfig: an internal error occurred: the request is not supported

OK, maybe the IP stack is corrupted (its a common problem), so I try:

netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt

Now, an ipconfig returns with:

mswsock.dll not found

I copy mswsock.dll from another system, but then ipconfig complains about:

ifmon.dll cannot be loaded.

At this point, I try LSPfix, but that doesn’t help.

Next, I try to delete the registry entries:

HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServices and remove winsock and winsock2

But the network still doesn’t work.

At one point, I was getting:

wuauserv.dll was loaded, but the dllregisterserver entry point was not found.

I couldn’t do sfc /scannow (customer didn’t have the original windoze XP CD)

At this stage all I could do is a repair install of windows (which finally did fix the problem).

Vista dhcp (ipconfig release renew don’t work well)

Computer Aid Posted on 22 October, 2007 by Luigi Martin22 October, 2007

I’ve started noticing that VISTA seems to refuse to correctly react to the ipconfig /release and ipconfig /renew commands.

I’ve noticed this with both wireless and wired connections.

A typical situation happened the other day:

Customer has a new ADSL modem, and a new VISTA PC, but cannot get it to work.

She paid Clive Peeters an extra $100 for a “tech” to install the new PC, but he couldn’t get adsl to work, so he suggested she go back to dialup.

Her brother also had a go (he tried to connect the modem to the PC via USB (folks: don’t do usb broadband unless you absolutely have to).

So, I connect the modem to the PC via ethernet, but VISTA says its got a 169.x.x.x address.

OK, I start an administrator command prompt, and do ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew

but the address is set to 169.x.x.x again…

I restart VISTA: hey it now gets the correct DHCP address!

I know XP is sometimes reluctant to notice network changes (particularly with workgroups), but it seems that VISTA is worse.

Although I must admit that someone had also disabled UAC, so who knows what else was done to the PC before I got there.

stuffed xp network settings

Computer Aid Posted on 10 February, 2007 by Luigi Martin10 February, 2007

I had an odd problem with my own PC.

The internet suddenly dropped out.

I noticed my tp-link router had reset itself (its not done before), so I waited a minute for it to reconnect with the internet, but still no internet.

I reset the router and the adsl modem, but no internet.

I restart the PC, but still no internet.

I try my other PC: it works fine.

I do ipconfig: the IPaddress and gateway address looks ok.

I shutdown my personal firewall: still no internet.

I check the router: its not blocking anything…

I do an ipconfig /all on my PC, and on the other working PC: hey, there is a difference: the DHCP and DNSservers were set to 192.168.0.1 (my router is 192.168.0.122, and my PC is 192.168.0.16 (the DHCP pool goes from 12 to 65, so nothing should be using that IP address).

I do ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew, and everything sorts itself out at last!

Its odd that a PC restart didn’t fix the problem… another mysterious XP networking problem.

A day later, the same problem happened again.

This has happened 1 or 2 more times in the last month, but I cannot pinpoint it (I have installed and upgraded some software, so that is another possible cause)…
