windows 7 NTFS will corrupt windows 10 NTFS

Computer Aid Posted on 11 August, 2015 by Luigi Martin9 September, 2015

windows-10-backdrop2I’m hoping this is just an isolated problem.

I upgraded customer PC from 7 to 10 due to a HDD failure.

Luckily, I was able to backup data to my workshop PC (Windows 7).

So on the customer PC, I installed a new HDD, installed windows 7, activated & did most updates, then upgraded to windows 10

Since the HDD was new, I decided to then do a clean install of Windows 10, after which, it re-activated after skipping the registration key prompt… so far all normal.

To speed up restoring customer data, I typically remove the HDD from a new system (in this case its a Windows 10 PC), attach it to my workshop Windows 7 PC (using SATA), copy the customer data to the Windows 10 HDD, then re-insert the Win10 HDD into original PC…

But each time I tried it, data would disappear, or was only half was visible, or I would get boot errors & all sorts of corruption.

After re-installing Windows 7 & doing the win10 upgrade 3 separate times, I eventually decided that windows 7 just cannot handle the Windows 10 file system

So, after much frustration, I just copied the customer data from the workshop PC to an external USB drive, then copy the data to the Win10 system via the USB

Now I need to ask myself: how long will I wait before upgrading all my work PCs to windows 10?

Convert raw filesystem into NTFS (partition recovery software cannot do fixboot)

Computer Aid Posted on 13 February, 2012 by Luigi Martin13 February, 2012

I got called out to a wreckers yard, to fix an infected Windows XP Computer.

It was a bit tricky, and once the infection was removed, the computer was left unable to start most exe files (some file associations were corrupt).

By that stage, it was closing time, so it was better for me to take the computer back to the office, and fix the problem during spare moments in my evening.

Once that was complete, I let the HDD defragment overnight.

The next morning, I closed the defrag window, and restarted the PC.

And then I got a bios message that said: operating system not found.

Great 🙁

Anyway, a bit of extra work, but it should be something trivial, like doing a chkdsk

I plugged the drive into the office computer, and windows says:

Disk/Drive is not formatted. Do you want to format it?

Obviously not.

I try UBCD4Win, but it also cannot recognise the partition as NTFS.

And a chkdsk will not work at all.

Using UBCD4Win, I run fixMBR, but that doesn’t help.

So I try Easeus Partition Manager, but after scanning for a few hours, it cannot detect and fix the problem.

I then try a few different partition tools, and I get some very strange results.

Some will immediately detect the partition as NTFS, and show that there is nothing wrong with the files and folders on the partition.

Others will just scan for a few hours, and not find anything.

How can similar software give such different results.

And most forums on the net are full of suggestions like “use data recovery software, then reformat”… It really shouldn’t be necessary.

I’m sure there must be a simple fix to get the filesystem restored.

So, after spending most of the day on this, with the customer getting very impatient about getting their computer back, I find all sorts of interesting pieces of information:

  • The NTFS filesystem is identified using the number “07”… in this case, some partition tools say its 07, other say its 00
  • The filesystem type is stored in 2 places: MBR and boot sector

So, its starting to look like the MBR and the boot sector have conflicting information about the filesystem type.

So how to fix it?

  • Boot from a windows XP CD
  • select recovery console
  • at the command prompt, enter: fixboot c:

For some reason, I kept thinking “this is a filesystem problem, not a boot problem… so fixboot will not help”.

So its a happy ending after a very frustrating day!

And I am very annoyed at these “partition recovery” companies!

Before starting a partition recovery process that could take many hours, how difficult is it to check that the filesystem type is consistent (rather than just looking at either the MBR or the boot sector)?

The wonders of ntfs and chkdsk

Computer Aid Posted on 10 July, 2006 by Luigi Martin10 July, 2006

Its not often that I say nice things about M1cr050ft, but I must say that the NTFS filesystem & the filesystem checking program are really top notch.

I have now recovered data from 2 different systems, (both seemed unrecoverable, at first glance).

The latest one was a laptop drive (the laptop wouldn't boot at all, no safe mode, nothing)

After connecting it to my main system (and waiting 15 minutes for bartpe to boot… not a promising start), I managed to run chkdsk.

While chkdsk was running, the drive gave many strange clicking noises, & the chkdsk process to about 3 hours in total…

I was starting to think that the drive was probably beyond recovery.

But in the end, chkdsk completed. It said it found some unreadable sectors, & tried to recover data from them, as well as correcting other ntfs problems.

I restarted into windows again (so I could copy files to my own HDD), & windows took an extra 10 minutes to start… hmmm this drive is not happy.

But once windows had started, bingo, the drive was visible & I recovered almost the entire HDD contents (minus some still corrupted… or maybe newly corrupted, files).

I managed to burn the files to dvd (and en extra copy of the critical ones to a CD), and the customer is happy.

He hasn't fully paid me yet, so I'd better chase him up…
